Self Care as a Political Act
Self care is a political action. I often feel tired and frazzled after another crazy news day. The relentless attacks on women, minorities, immigrants and Mother Nature is exhausting. One positive action is how folks are fighting back. Honestly before the 2016 presidential elections I rarely called an elected official or attended a protest event. Those days are over.
Supporting wellness is healthy not just for ourselves but for the kind of world we want to live in. Eating healthy, enjoying nature, getting enough sleep and connecting with others helps us be resilient and strong. Audre Lorde who described herself as "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet" said this about self care- “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
My research into "wellness" has been quite illuminating. The wellness industry is predominately female. This isn't a surprise. Women see a need in their lives and go for it. Of course there is wellness bashing- mostly by big pharma and big corporations run by men. They hate to see their bonus and perks disappear as folks vote with their money for the future they want.
Wellness also means having access to affordable care. That's why we're donating $1 from the sale of our Wellness With Attitude Kit or tin of #resist creme to Maine Family Planning. It was an article a friend sent me that got me started on my wellness + feminism research. The article; This state could become a "contraceptive desert": Trump's new "gag rule" goes far beyond Planned Parenthood, written by Caroline Kitchener and published back in August in The Lily. Maine Family Planning is similar to Planned Parenthood but without the name recognition or access to big donor money. Planned Parenthood locations tend to be in southern or mid-coast Maine. If you live in Maine's District 2, which is geographically large but far less inhabited it's difficult to access affordable wellness care. MFP offers annual wellness visits, reproductive health care, contraception, counseling- services we need to keep us healthy both physically and mentally.
We're super excited to announce our revamped "Wellness With Attitude" Kit. We've tweaked it just a tiny bit to make it more eco friendly especially with packaging and postage.
